Men’s participation in unpaid care

Das neuseeländische Department of Labour und das Ministry of Women’s Affairs hat eine umfangreiche Literaturstudie erarbeitet, die Hindernisse und förderliche Faktoren für die Teilhabe von Männern und Vätern an unbezahlter Pflegearbeit zusammenstellt. Dabei wird die Betreuung von kleinen Kindern, die Pflege erkrankter Partnerinnen und die Pflege der Eltern betrachtet.
Als Barrieren werden unter anderem folgende Faktoren identifiziert:
- workplace factors such as working hours, workplace cultures and occupational characteristics, as well as the gender pay gap
- the impacts of various government policies and laws, such as paid parental leave, laws impacting on separated fathers
- not residing with children (i.e. non-resident fathers)
- women’s preferences for undertaking care
- the attitudes and skills of professional services
- the support of men in settings such as playgroups
- structural barriers to men’s care, such as the placing of infant changing facilities in women’s rest rooms
- culture and ideology
- a lack of ‘official’ advocates for men as carers in the policy arena.
